Mary J. Blige turns 42 today
An American singer-songwriter, record producer, and occasional actress. She is a recipient of nine Grammy Awards and four American Music Awards, and has recorded eight multi-platinum albums. She is the only artist with Grammy Award wins in R&B;, Rap, Gospel, and Pop. Blige started her musical career in 1992, releasing her debut album, What's the 411? on MCA Records and Uptown.

Edmund Hillary died 5 years ago today
A New Zealand mountaineer, explorer and philanthropist. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed as having reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. Hillary was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
